Position Overview:
The Construction Controller oversees all financial operations for a construction company, ensuring accurate job costing, strong financial controls, and timely reporting. This role partners with project managers, executives, and operations leadership to support forecasting, cash flow management, and strategic financial planning.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions, including GL, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end close.
- Prepare financial statements, WIP reports, and variance analyses.
- Maintain accurate job cost tracking, project budgets, and cost-to-complete forecasting.
- Ensure timely billing, progress billings, lien releases, and collections.
Job Costing & Project Support
- Partner with project managers to review job budgets, change orders, and cost performance.
- Monitor labor, materials, subcontractor expenses, and production tracking.
- Identify cost overruns and provide financial insights to improve profitability.
Cash Flow & Forecasting
- Manage cash flow projections, vendor payments, and banking relationships.
- Support annual budgeting, multi-year forecasting, and financial modeling.
- Review contracts, insurance requirements, and financial risk exposures.
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, state/federal construction regulations, and audit requirements.
- Maintain internal controls around purchasing, payroll, and job cost allocations.
- Oversee tax filings, fixed assets, depreciation, and equipment accounting.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Optimize accounting systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks, Procore).
- Streamline workflows for billing, reporting, and job cost management.
- Lead and mentor accounting staff and support department growth.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA a plus).
- 5-10+ years of accounting experience; strong preference for construction industry.
- Expertise in job costing, WIP schedules, and construction financial reporting.
- Proficiency with construction accounting software.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
